Dr. Evaleen Johnson of Braddock, Pennsylvania, was born on June 21, 1933, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and passed away on September 5, 2025, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She grew up in Clairton, PA, the beloved daughter of the late “Howard” John Johnson and “Nellie” Florence Johnson. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Juanita Johnson, Howard Johnson Jr., Floyd Johnson, William Johnson, Raymond Johnson, and Florence Johnson.
Dr. Johnson leaves behind her loving sons, Ata Essiet and Mbuotidem “Bodie” Essiet, along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
A woman of extraordinary accomplishment, Dr. Johnson graduated from Clairton High School Class of 1953. She then served her country with honor in the United States Air Force Reserve as a Flight Nurse before pursuing a life dedicated to education and service. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (B.S.N.) from the University of Pittsburgh, Class of 1965. From there, she married the late Mr. Asuquo B.N. Essiet and started her family. Shortly after, Evaleen was inspired to complete the Master’s Program in Social Work (M.S.W.) from the University of Pittsburgh, Class of 1971. While raising her children, she taught Nursing at the Community College of Allegheny County, South Campus Branch. In between working and raising two children, Evaleen went back to school to earn her PhD in Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh, Class of 1983. She used her education to level up and served as Director of the Holy Family Institute and resumed her profession as a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Her professional journey took her across the globe, where she embraced new cultures, experiences, and opportunities.
She also had a deep love for the arts. With passions for quilting, sewing, and crafts, she was recognized with a Mayoral Award for her creative work. Beyond her accomplishments, she most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, sharing her warmth, wisdom, and love.
Dr. Evaleen Johnson lived her life to the fullest, gracefully, fearlessly, and purposefully. Her legacy of service, creativity, and devotion to family will continue to inspire all who knew her.
